Seven furniture projects, with the parts worked out
Baltic Birch plywood furniture starts with a useful design, an appropriate face grade and a cut list that matches the actual sheet. This library includes a desk, side table, nightstand, media storage console, low bookcase, entryway console and desktop organizer.
Each project has finished dimensions, a part list, a front elevation, a side section and a grain-aware cutting layout. Six use 18 mm main panels; the smaller organizer uses 12 mm. Selected projects also use a separate 5 mm applied back.
The cover is an AI-generated furniture concept, not a photograph of completed prototypes. The original dimensioned drawings control the geometry. These are workshop planning examples: part sizes and layouts have been mathematically checked, but the assemblies have not been physically built or load-tested. Final joinery, anchoring and intended loads need review before fabrication. Berta sells the sheet materials, not these assembled furniture pieces.

Check the room, chair, objects to store and available wall space before choosing a size. Changing a width or depth can alter joints, stiffness, stability and sheet yield—not just the appearance.
B/BB or BB/BB: choose by the faces people will see
For these unfinished projects, B/BB is the option to evaluate for a prominent show face, such as a tabletop or outside end. Its reverse face is BB; do not assume both sides have the same appearance. BB/BB is an alternative where permitted face repairs suit the design, including utility interiors or an intentionally patch-friendly look.
On a center divider, both faces may be visible. On a side panel, one face is outside and the other faces an open compartment. Mark the show face of every part before nesting it. A neat geometric layout does not guarantee that every patch, color change or grain pattern lands where you want it.

Start with samples, then approve the full sheet. Compare the B/BB Baltic Birch sample and BB/BB Baltic Birch sample with your intended finish. A small sample helps assess material and finish; it cannot predict the location of every repair on a full sheet.

Read these cut lists before making the first cut
Millimeters are the master units. The main designs assume a measured, consistent thickness of 18 mm or 12 mm. A true 3/4 inch is 19.05 mm; a true 1/2 inch is 12.7 mm. Substituting those exact inch thicknesses changes the internal parts. Use the Baltic Birch metric thickness chart and measure your own stock.
G × C means along face grain × across face grain. Each map assumes a 2440 × 1220 mm sheet with face grain along the 2440 mm direction. Tops and shelves have grain along their width; sides have vertical grain when assembled. For applied backs, G is the installed height. Confirm the grain direction on the actual sheet.
Each main-panel map reserves 10 mm around the sheet and 4 mm between parts. The 4 mm separation is a planning kerf allowance, not a measurement of your blade. Rework the layout for a wider kerf, damaged edges, added rough-cut allowance or a different stock size. Shaded unused areas are offcuts, not additional ordered parts.
These are square butt-joint dimensions: top caps sit over the sides, while bottoms and rails fit between them. No dado, rabbet, miter or edge-banding allowance is included. Changing the joinery requires changing the list. The diagrams are nesting and geometry references, not drilling templates or saw-operating instructions.
Divider between bottom and top = H − 2t
Equal bay width with one center divider = (W − 3t) ÷ 2
Here, W is the overall width, H the case height and t the actual common panel thickness. Shelf positions use z, measured up from the case base to the shelf’s underside. All listed dimensions are finished net parts; the maps show one project at a time, not a combined order for seven projects.
Choose the joint system before cutting: suitable dowels or furniture-assembly screws, appropriate wood glue and back fixings must match the actual panel and loads. Do not rely on glue-only butt joints or a thin back as the sole attachment. Project 01 · 18 mm main panels
1. Compact writing desk
A compact Baltic Birch plywood desk for a laptop, notebook and task light. The 580 mm depth keeps the two deep cutting strips within the sheet width, while a front apron and rear panel are included to brace the assembly rather than leaving a top on two unconnected sides.

Material and show-face plan
Evaluate B/BB for the top and outside side faces. The rear panel and apron can use BB/BB if the visible repairs are acceptable and the actual thickness matches. The top has no side overhang in this plan.
Assembly sequence to review with your joinery
- Mark the better top face and the two outward side faces. Cut the matching sides together in the same setup so both finish at 742 mm.
- Dry-fit the sides below the top. Fit the 1164 × 250 rear panel between them, in the rear 18 mm of depth, with its top at z = 742.
- Fit the 1164 × 60 front apron between the sides and directly below the front of the top. Its lower edge is at z = 682.
- Check diagonals and chair clearance, then assemble with the reviewed joint system. Keep both bracing pieces; changing or omitting them requires a new stability and stiffness assessment.
Fit and use check: The clear front opening is 1164 mm wide and 682 mm high below the apron. Test that with the actual chair and user before making the desk. The plan is not a standing desk, workbench, seat or load-rated support for heavy equipment.
Sheet-layout guide: Rip two 580 mm strips; crosscut top and sides. Subdivide the second strip remainder for the 250 and 60 mm rails. Each main-panel map fits one 2440 × 1220 mm sheet under the stated assumptions; unused material may serve other projects. Appearance selection can require a different layout or extra stock.
For a wider top or a heavier load, first review how unsupported span and support affect plywood deflection; do not simply extend the top and rails.

2. Side table with a low shelf
This small side table adds a lower shelf without a drawer or complicated hardware. A partial-height applied back is included to help brace the case; it begins at the low shelf rather than extending down to the floor.

Material and show-face plan
Use the best B/BB face on the top and side exteriors, or accept the character of BB/BB throughout. The 5 mm back is a separate part, not a leftover cut from the 18 mm sheet.
Assembly sequence to review with your joinery
- Cut the 420 mm top, matching 462 mm side heights and the 384 mm between-side shelf. Mark both side interiors from their base edges.
- Set the shelf underside at z = 100 on both sides. Its top is therefore at z = 118, leaving 344 mm between the shelf and the underside of the top.
- Dry-fit and join the shelf, sides and top using the selected joinery. Check the case for square before fixing the back.
- Apply the 380 H × 420 W × 5 mm back from z = 100 to 480. Fit floor-protection pads as appropriate; their height is additional to the stated case height.
Fit and use check: The case is 420 mm deep, but the applied back makes the completed depth 425 mm. Do not omit that extra 5 mm when fitting the table beside a wall or another cabinet. This is a side table, not seating or a step.

3. Open two-level nightstand
An open nightstand keeps frequently used items visible and avoids drawer-slide compatibility work. Its two compartments are intentionally different heights: the lower opening is 232 mm, while the upper opening is 294 mm.

B/BB can prioritize the top and outside ends, but the reverse faces are visible inside the open bays. Review both sides before choosing; BB/BB may suit a more relaxed, repair-tolerant design.
Assembly sequence to review with your joinery
- Cut the two identical 562 mm sides. Mark the middle shelf’s underside at z = 250 from the same base reference on each side.
- Fit the 414 mm bottom between the sides with its underside flush at z = 0. Fit the second 414 mm panel at the marked middle-shelf level.
- Fit the top over the sides, check the opening dimensions and square the case. Plan access for the chosen connectors before closing the assembly.
- Fix the 580 H × 450 W × 5 mm back to the squared case. Secure the finished storage unit against tip-over with suitable attachments to substantial case members and the wall, not only the thin back.
Fit and use check: The back adds 5 mm to the 380 mm case depth. The middle shelf position is an underside dimension, not its top surface or the center of a groove.
Sheet-layout guide: Rip two 380 mm strips. The second strip is deliberately kept spacious rather than using a near-zero end allowance. Each main-panel map fits one 2440 × 1220 mm sheet under the stated assumptions; unused material may serve other projects. Appearance selection can require a different layout or extra stock.
Adding a drawer is a redesign, not an extra part in this list. Use drawer-box thickness and slide compatibility checks before changing the open compartment.

4. Two-bay media storage console
A low two-bay console for media accessories, games and indoor storage. The full-height center divider creates two shorter spans, while the rear remains largely open below a pair of bracing rails.

Evaluate the B face for the long top. The divider is visible from both bays, so a one-better-face grade does not hide its reverse. BB/BB is a reasonable appearance option where its permitted repairs suit the interior.
Assembly sequence to review with your joinery
- Cut the top and bottom from the first 360 mm strip. Keep them distinct: the top is 1200 mm wide and the between-side bottom is 1164 mm.
- Fit the bottom between the side panels. Set the 384 mm divider on top of the bottom, with its left edge at x = 591; it ends below the top.
- Fit one 573 × 120 rear rail in each bay, in the rear 18 mm of depth. Their tops align at z = 402 with the underside of the top.
- Complete and square the case using the reviewed joints, then anchor it appropriately. Verify ventilation, cable routing and required clearances for any equipment before loading a bay.
Fit and use check: Each bay is 573 mm wide and 384 mm high. The rear rail reduces the available rear depth in its upper 120 mm band. The open back is not proof of adequate equipment ventilation. This untested console is not a rated television support; mount a TV independently using its approved system.
Sheet-layout guide: Rip two 360 mm strips. Crosscut top/bottom from the first; sides/divider and 120 mm rear-rail blanks from the second. 5. Low four-cubby bookcase
The four-cubby layout uses a full-height center divider and two shorter fixed shelves rather than one uninterrupted middle shelf. The interior geometry is symmetrical: each clear compartment is 373 mm wide and 423 mm high.

Use B/BB for the outside ends and top when those show faces matter. Inside, both faces of the divider are exposed; inspect the reverse or select BB/BB where repairs are acceptable. Keep the 5 mm back in the material order.
Assembly sequence to review with your joinery
- Cut the two 882 mm sides, 864 mm divider and 373 mm half-shelves. Mark both shelf undersides at z = 441 from the case base.
- Plan and assemble the shelf-to-divider connections before enclosing the case. Opposing connectors must not collide within the 18 mm divider; choose a joint system suitable for shelves on both sides.
- Fit the bottom at z = 0, the divider on the bottom at z = 18, and the top over the side panels. Check all four openings before fixing the back.
- Apply the full 900 H × 800 W × 5 mm back to the squared case. Anchor the bookcase to suitable wall structure through an appropriate restraint and substantial case member, then place heavier items low.
Fit and use check: Do not remove the divider to create an open 764 mm shelf span while retaining this plan’s assumptions. Book weight and shelf joints still need review; the face grade does not provide a shelf load rating.

6. Shallow entryway console
A shallow console for an entryway, with a small open compartment under the top and clear space below. The rear rail and lower stretcher are part of the assembly; the upper shelf is shallower than the top for a specific reason.

Material and show-face plan
Prioritize the show face on the top and outside ends. A rear rail can use matching-thickness BB/BB when its permitted repairs are unobtrusive. This is a slender unit, so plan the wall restraint at the same time as the material list.
Assembly sequence to review with your joinery
- Cut the matching 742 mm sides, 800 mm top and between-side pieces. Keep the 282 mm shelf depth separate from the 300 mm top/side depth.
- Fit the 160 mm upper rear rail between the sides, occupying the rear 18 mm. Its top is at z = 742 and bottom at z = 582.
- Fit the shelf with its underside at z = 600. Its rear edge meets the front of the rear rail at y = 282; it does not overlap that rail. Fit the lower rear stretcher from z = 120 to 200.
- Fit the top, square the assembly and complete the selected joints. Secure the console to an appropriate wall attachment before use; account for baseboards rather than pulling the case out of square.
Fit and use check: The shelf is 764 × 282 mm, not 764 × 300 mm. A 300 mm shelf would intersect the rear rail in this geometry. The shallow upper compartment is 124 mm high above the shelf. Do not use the console as a bench or step.
Sheet-layout guide: Rip one 300 mm strip for top/sides. Use a second 300 mm blank for the 282 mm shelf and the two rear rails. 7. Asymmetric desktop organizer
The smallest project is a countertop or desktop organizer with one tall bay and two shorter right-hand compartments. It uses a separate 12 mm cut list and may suit a sound, correctly oriented offcut instead of a full sheet.

The reviewed BB/BB range includes a 12 mm Baltic Birch option. Do not describe it as the B/BB 18 mm product. Inspect both visible sides of the divider and retain the 5 mm back.
Assembly sequence to review with your joinery
- Use the 12 mm dimensions throughout: sides are 288 mm high, the bottom is 576 mm wide, and the divider is 276 mm high.
- Fit the bottom between the sides at z = 0. Stand the divider on it at z = 12, with its left edge at x = 294.
- Fit the 282 mm right-hand shelf with its underside at z = 144, then fit the top over the sides. The left bay has no middle shelf.
- Square the case, attach the 300 H × 600 W × 5 mm back with fixings suited to thin material, and secure the organizer against movement or tip-over on its supporting surface.
Fit and use check: The left opening is 282 × 276 mm. Each right opening is 282 × 132 mm. The main parts occupy a 1184 × 444 mm trimmed envelope; an offcut must also allow for trimming and face quality. This is not a monitor riser, wall-hung shelf or stacking unit.
Sheet-layout guide: Two 220 mm strips use a 1184 × 444 mm trimmed envelope. An appropriate offcut may work; add trim allowance. Separate 5 mm back. The side table, nightstand, bookcase and organizer use four different applied backs. The map below fits one set of all four into a 2440 × 1220 mm sheet with the same perimeter and kerf assumptions. It does not mean one back size works for every project.

Use the 5 mm BB/BB Baltic Birch variant as the material to evaluate. A true 3/16 inch is 4.7625 mm, not exactly 5 mm. Measure the sheet, and recalculate the finished depth if the back thickness changes.
Backs do not replace anchoring hardware. An applied back can contribute to a properly joined case’s racking resistance, but this guide does not specify a structural wall-hanging connection. Attach restraints to suitable substantial members using an approved system.
Joinery, edges and finishing: complete the material guide
Mock up one joint before producing the batch. The listed parts meet with square butt joints. Choose dowels or furniture-assembly screws appropriate to the real thickness, and plan their access and spacing. Through-fastener heads affect the visible design. A dado changes the required panel length, while a thick applied edge can change the overall dimensions.
Use a wood adhesive suitable for the material and service conditions, keep its bonding areas prepared as instructed, and follow its clamping and curing guidance. Titebond’s wood-glue guidance explains why ordinary wood-glue bonding should not be assumed to work over intact paint, stain or sealer.
Decide whether the layered edge stays visible. Test a representative cut edge for repairs, gaps and the finished appearance. Sand within the veneer’s limits and ease exposed edges appropriately. An all-birch core does not guarantee a flawless edge at every cut. The PVC-versus-veneer edge-banding guide covers alternatives when the layered look is not wanted.
Approve the finish on the real grade. Use an offcut that includes a typical face repair and the intended edge treatment. Compare the finished sample in the room before coating the project. Start with plywood stain and finish testing; do not assume one stain will hide every patch or make both faces identical.
Include stability in the build, not as an afterthought. CPSC recommends anchoring furniture such as bookcases and dressers, and securing televisions. Review CPSC’s Anchor It! guidance and the selected restraint instructions. Use suitable wall structure and substantial furniture members, not just a 5 mm back. None of these examples is seating, a step or child-climbing furniture.
Protect the workpiece and use appropriate supports, guarding and eye, hearing and dust protection for the tools. A nesting diagram is not an instruction to handle a full sheet on an unsuitable saw setup. Have the final design reviewed if the intended use demands an established load rating or other compliance.
Before ordering the sheets
Choose the project, confirm the room dimensions and joinery, then mark every visible face. Check the stock thickness and grain direction against the list. Order by the selected grade and thickness—not just the phrase “furniture plywood”—and include backs, adhesive, connectors, restraints, finish and floor protection as separate items.
The one-project maps are not an optimized combined order for all seven builds. Some parts may share sound offcuts, but face selection and grain can prevent apparently convenient rotations. Is Baltic Birch plywood good for furniture?
It is a useful material to evaluate for furniture, especially when the core and exposed layered edge suit the design. The actual grade, thickness, joints, finish and load requirements still determine whether the selected panel is appropriate.
Should furniture use B/BB or BB/BB?
Evaluate B/BB for a more prominent show face and BB/BB where allowed face repairs suit the project. B/BB still has a BB reverse, so open shelves and dividers need both sides considered.
Can these plans use true 3/4-inch plywood instead of 18 mm?
Not without adjusting the thickness-dependent parts and checking the assembly. A true 3/4 inch is 19.05 mm; the listed between-side dimensions assume 18 mm.
Does each project need a full sheet?
Each main-panel map fits within one full sheet under its stated assumptions, but smaller projects may use appropriate offcuts. The 5 mm backs are separate. The maps are not a claim of minimum combined sheet quantity for all seven projects.
Are the drawings tested furniture plans or drilling templates?
No. Their rectangular parts, assembled geometry and sheet fit were checked mathematically, but no physical prototype or load test is claimed. Review the joint system, anchoring, intended use and any changed dimensions before fabrication.
