Choosing wood dowel pins for cabinets and furniture
A dowel joint starts with the right diameter, length and hole alignment. Whether you are assembling a cabinet box or repairing a furniture joint, check the dimensions your design requires before choosing a bulk pack.
Three checks before ordering
- Match the diameter.Confirm the specified dowel diameter against your jig, drill bit and existing holes. A close measurement is not a guarantee of a correct fit.
- Allow for the full length.Check how far the pin enters each workpiece. Plan the hole depth for the joint and adhesive without drilling through a finished face.
- Count the pins, not just the joints.Multiply your planned joints by the pins used in each joint, then allow for test pieces and spares. This listing is a 2,000-pin bulk pack.
Prepare a test joint first
Mark matching hole positions and use a suitable jig or drilling guide. Set a depth stop for your joint, clear the drilling debris, and check alignment with a dry assembly in scrap material.
For a glued joint, use a wood adhesive suited to the materials and follow its application, clamping and curing instructions. Do not force an oversized pin into a finished part.
The joint design, panel material, hole accuracy and adhesive all matter. Dowel pins are not a universal substitute for every screw, fastener or connector.

What size and quantity does this listing include?
The listing is for 2,000 wood dowel pins, advertised as 5/16″ in diameter and 1½″ long, with a fluted body and beveled ends. Confirm the fit on a sample before drilling your finished parts.
Are 5/16-inch and 8 mm dowels interchangeable?
Not automatically. The exact conversion of 5/16 inch is 7.9375 mm. Actual dowel dimensions and hole tolerances determine the fit, so check a sample rather than assuming the two labels are interchangeable.
What does the fluted profile mean?
Fluted pins have grooves along the body rather than a smooth surface. These pins are intended for dowel-and-glue assembly. Choose the hole size and adhesive for your joint, and follow the adhesive manufacturer's instructions.
Can I use them in plywood cabinet construction?
They can be considered for cabinet joints designed for dowels, provided the diameter, length and hole layout suit the panel and joint. Check panel thickness, edge distance and drilling depth, and test the connection in scrap from the same material. Do not assume one dowel size suits every panel thickness.
Are these the same as adjustable shelf-support pins?
No. These are wood joining dowels for assembly, not dedicated adjustable shelf supports. Use the correct shelf-support hardware for a removable or height-adjustable shelf.
