The joint decides the screw—not the plywood label
A screw that fits an 18 mm cabinet side driven into a shelf edge can break through two 18 mm panels fastened face to face. Pocket-hole joints need a different screw and a matched jig setting. Start with the connection, then measure the material and check the screw’s installed path.
This plywood screw size chart separates straight-drive fit calculations from manufacturer-specific pocket-hole recommendations. It covers cabinet construction and component attachment—not wall anchoring, structural sheathing or a load-rated fastening schedule.
Choose the joint → measure both parts → select the screw system → check engagement and tip clearance → test the setup.

Read the row labels: the first four rows are dimensional examples to evaluate with a suitable cabinet screw and joint design. They are not manufacturer-approved lengths or strength ratings. The last two rows are Kreg K4 system references, not settings for every pocket-hole jig.
For straight-drive examples, L is the measured length from the underside of an unrecessed pan/washer head to the tip. P is geometric tip reach beyond the joint. Neither P nor remaining cover is a specified minimum for a loaded joint. Scroll horizontally to compare all columns.

Required penetration is not the same as available reach. The cited guides do not establish one minimum plywood-edge embedment for all these cabinet joints. A 20.10 mm calculation tells you where the tip goes; it does not prove that the joint can carry its intended load.
Measure the panels before choosing a length
A true 3/4 inch equals 19.05 mm, while an 18 mm panel is about 0.709 inch. Likewise, 1/2 inch equals 12.70 mm, not 12 mm. Those differences affect screw cover, pocket-hole positioning and the amount of material left around a pilot hole.

Face entry
The screw enters through a broad panel face. The receiving panel’s measured thickness limits the available depth before breakthrough.
Edge entry
The screw enters the exposed plywood edge. Reach runs along the panel, while the narrow thickness controls the material beside the screw. An 18 mm shelf is not an 18 mm-deep receiving block.
An entry centered across an 18 mm edge is 9 mm from either face. That is a geometric centerline—not a screw-spacing or minimum edge-distance specification. Core quality, nearby grooves, screw diameter and end distance still need review.

How to calculate screw reach and remaining cover
For a straight screw with an unrecessed pan/washer head, let L be its actual under-head-to-tip length and A the distance from the underside of its seated head to the joint interface. Include any washer, bracket or spacer in that path.
With a measured 31.75 mm screw through an 18 mm panel, P = 31.75 − 18 = 13.75 mm. In an 18 mm receiver, that leaves 4.25 mm of geometric cover. Subtract allowances for the actual screw and panel tolerances before accepting a design.
Effective thread engagement can be less than P. The pointed tip and any unthreaded shank inside the receiving piece do not provide the same full-thread purchase as the threaded body. Obtain the required engagement for the exact fastener, substrate and load; do not convert this length calculation into a capacity claim.
Measure the screw, too
A package length is not always the exact dimension you should use in a close-clearance calculation. GRK’s Cabinet Screw drawing lists its nominal 1-1/2 inch size with an L dimension of 1.55 inches, and notes that its dimensions do not include manufacturing tolerances. That is why the geometry examples use measured lengths rather than assuming every screw with the same label is identical. [4]
A counterbore or recessed head changes A. A flat-head countersunk screw also uses a different length reference from the unrecessed heads shown here: establish its installed reference before calculating. Pocket screws need their angled jig geometry, not this perpendicular face-entry shortcut.
Pilot holes: use the screw manufacturer’s guidance
A pilot hole prepares the receiving material for the threads. A clearance hole lets the screw pass through the first piece so the joint can draw together. A countersink or counterbore seats a particular head. A pocket-hole jig drills its own stepped geometry. These are different operations.
A manufacturer-family reference—not a universal plywood chart
McFeely’s publishes these starting sizes for its square-drive wood screws using standard-point or brad-point bits. Its separate tapered-bit chart is different. The table below does not specify which diameter is correct for an unknown plywood core or plywood-edge joint. [3]

Do not choose the hardwood column simply because the face veneer says maple or birch. The screw may engage a different core. Also, do not transfer these drill sizes to a proprietary cutting-point screw with a different root diameter.
Self-tapping is system-specific
GRK markets its Cabinet Screw’s Zip-Tip as eliminating predrilling. That is guidance for its product, not permission to skip joint review on every narrow plywood edge or to apply the claim to another screw. [5]
A pocket still must be drilled
“No separate mating pilot” does not mean driving a pocket screw into undrilled stock. Match the jig, stepped bit, head and stop setup. Recheck undersized or mixed-thickness material rather than improvising a longer screw.
What about confirmat screws?
Confirmats are a separate fastening system, not a larger substitute for a #8 wood screw. McFeely’s 7 × 50 mm listing names melamine, MDF and particleboard applications and specifies a matching MS-7050 stepped drill. That listing alone does not establish a universal 7 × 50 mm recommendation for plywood. Obtain approval and the drilling specification for the actual plywood joint. [6]
Where cabinetmakers should not reuse the same screw
Drawer corners
Do not copy an 18 mm carcass-edge detail into a 12 mm drawer side. Plan the corner joint and bottom groove together; a screw can collide with the groove or leave too little material around its path.
Hinges and drawer slides
Use the fastener head, diameter, bore and depth specified for the exact hardware. A screw fitting the panel can still interfere with a moving slide or fail to seat in its mounting hole.
Cabinet-to-wall attachment
This article is not an anchoring schedule. Follow the cabinet and anchor manufacturers’ requirements for the wall substrate, load and mounting rail. Thin backs are not automatically structural hanging rails.
Drywall and pocket screws
Do not assume that a bugle-head drywall screw replaces a purpose-made pocket screw or approved cabinet fastener. Similar length and appearance do not establish interchangeable head seating or performance.

Do not ignore a factory finish at the glue line
Titebond advises that most of its wood glues are designed for bare wood and that coatings can interfere with bonding. Plan suitable bare-wood glue surfaces or an adhesive approved for the actual coated materials. A screw does not turn an unsuitable glue interface into a dependable bonded joint. [7]

Before you order screws for a production batch
- Record the connection. Identify face or edge entry, both actual thicknesses, any dado, the installed head position and the nearby hardware.
- Specify the complete fastener. Record the manufacturer, screw family, gauge, head, measured length, threaded length and finish—not just “screws for 3/4 plywood.”
- Confirm the drilling requirement. Separate the receiving pilot from the first-piece clearance hole and the head seat. Set a depth stop where drilling can damage the far face.
- Make a same-stock sample. Clamp securely, use appropriate eye protection, seat the screw without burying the head, and inspect for gaps, splitting, stripping and breakthrough.
- Approve the joint for its actual use. A clean-looking sample checks fabrication, not rated strength. Resolve missing engagement, spacing or load guidance before repeating the detail.
Frequently asked questions
What size screw should I use for 3/4-inch plywood cabinets?
There is no single answer. First distinguish a side-to-shelf edge joint, a face-to-face attachment and a pocket joint. Measure whether the stock is 18 mm, a true 3/4 inch or another thickness. Use the relevant geometry check and the exact fastener or jig instructions.
Is a 1-1/2-inch screw too long for two 18 mm panels?
For perpendicular face-to-face fastening with an unrecessed head, a screw measured at 38.10 mm exceeds the 36 mm stack by 2.10 mm. That same length has a different path when driven into a shelf edge. Check actual screw dimensions and head seating.
How much screw penetration does plywood need?
The required effective thread engagement depends on the screw, receiving core, face or edge entry and joint load. Do not mistake the calculated tip reach for a tested minimum. Use an approved joint design or obtain the fastener supplier’s requirement.
Can I use a hardwood pilot-hole size for birch plywood?
Not solely because it has a birch veneer. Identify the receiving core and use the exact screw family’s guidance. A manufacturer’s hardwood/softwood chart is not automatically a plywood-edge drilling specification.
Does a self-tapping pocket screw mean I can skip drilling?
No. A pocket joint still requires its specified stepped pocket hole. Any no-predrilling guidance for the mating piece belongs to that manufacturer’s system, not to all screw types.
