Size the cabinet and the opening separately

Berta’s bridge wall cabinet range lists 30, 33 and 36-inch widths; 12, 15, 18, 21 and 24-inch heights; and a 12-inch depth. The right combination depends on the available wall space, mounting elevation and the appliance or opening below.

A bridge cabinet is a short wall cabinet used to continue an upper run across an opening. Its product size does not specify the ventilation space, filler allowance, door swing or anchoring needed for your installation.

The model code identifies the width and height in this particular range: W3012 is the listed 30-inch-wide, 12-inch-high option. All combinations below are present in the current size selector. White and gray are color choices, not different dimensional systems.

The millimeter figures are exact arithmetic conversions of the listed inch sizes, not caliper measurements of a delivered cabinet. Obtain the approved dimensional drawing before finalizing fillers, end panels or close-fitting appliances.

What each cabinet dimension does—and does not—tell you

Three dimensions, three separate fit checks.
Dimension Use it to plan Keep separate
Width The cabinet’s place along the upper run. Fillers, finished end panels, wall irregularities, appliance side clearances and neighboring doors.
Height The distance between the cabinet’s top and bottom datums. Ceiling trim, soffits, appliance ventilation and mounting clearances.
Depth The box’s projection from its mounting plane. Door and handle projection, service voids, trim and the depth of the appliance below.

A 12-inch-deep bridge cabinet is not a deep refrigerator enclosure. It can sit behind the front plane of a refrigerator or a deeper tall cabinet. Decide whether that stepped appearance is intended; do not bring it forward on improvised blocking without an approved support detail.

For the style decision, see why Shaker cabinets work across different kitchen layouts. Door style helps coordinate the run, but it does not establish installation dimensions.

Calculate the available height from fixed datums

Use one finished-floor reference for the kitchen. Record the planned upper cabinet-top elevation and the lowest permitted cabinet-bottom elevation. The latter must already respect the design and the exact appliance instructions.

Maximum cabinet height = upper datum − minimum permitted lower datum

Illustrative layout: if the upper datum is 90 inches and the permitted cabinet bottom is 72 inches, the available height is 18 inches. An 18-inch cabinet reaches the lower datum; a 21-inch cabinet would finish at 69 inches and fail that particular limit.

Example arithmetic only. Neither 90 inches nor 72 inches is a universal kitchen requirement.
Selected height Bottom with top at 90 in Compared with example 72 in lower limit
12 in 78 in Above the example limit
15 in 75 in Above the example limit
18 in 72 in At the example limit
21 in 69 in Below the example limit
24 in 66 in Below the example limit

This elevation shows the variables, not an approved appliance installation. Door outlines are schematic; verify the actual cabinet configuration.

Above a cooktop, range, hood or microwave: follow the exact appliance and cabinet installation requirements. This chart does not establish a safe clearance to combustible cabinetry, a ventilation duct route or permission to mount an appliance to a bridge cabinet.

Check width and door movement before ordering

Measure the intended mounting space at the top, middle and bottom. Record the tightest usable width after accounting for the finished wall surfaces. Then reserve the approved end panels and fillers. A gap left after subtracting cabinet width is not automatically the correct filler size. Where the run turns a corner, confirm the blind-corner footprint and filler allowance before assigning the remaining width.

Check the complete closed front and its swing. Door thickness, handles, hinge pivot position, adjacent tall doors and nearby walls can use space outside the nominal box. A refrigerator may also need additional side clearance for its own door to open far enough to remove internal drawers; consult its model-specific instructions.

Treat a window opening the same way: measure trim projection, handles and the window’s operation, not just the drywall opening. Avoid placing storage where the doors cannot be reached or used comfortably.

Use the Kitchen Layout Planner to organize a concept, then validate the result with field measurements and product drawings. A generated layout is not installation approval.

Bridge-cabinet measurement worksheet

A purchasing worksheet, not a drilling schedule.
Record before purchase Your value / evidence
Cabinet location and model ____________________________
Usable finished wall width at three heights Top ____ / middle ____ / bottom ____
Upper cabinet-top datum ____ above the same finished-floor reference
Minimum permitted cabinet-bottom datum ____; appliance/manual or design reference ____
Depth and front projection Box ____ / door + handle ____ / adjacent front ____
Fillers, end panels and ceiling trim Sizes ____; included or separately ordered ____
Appliance or window model ____; required ventilation, access and clearance checked ____
Wall construction and anchoring plan Approved mounting detail ____
Delivery and access route Packaged dimensions, unloading and doorway route confirmed ____

Keep the selected model and color on the order as well as the project drawing. Buying two short cabinets with the same width does not mean they share a height, internal opening or door arrangement.

Installation planning without inventing an anchor schedule

Have a qualified installer confirm the mounting substrate, fasteners and support detail for the cabinet and expected contents. Cabinet-to-cabinet joining does not automatically replace wall anchoring, and the box should not depend on the refrigerator or another appliance for support.

For related fabrication decisions, use the cabinet plywood selection guide and the plywood screw chart for cabinet joints. The screw article addresses cabinet joinery, not a wall-anchor schedule. For base-run elevation and toe-kick coordination, review cabinet leveling and height planning.

Before installation day, confirm what is assembled, the packaged size, delivery service level, unloading responsibilities and the route into the room. Do not assume the short cabinet’s finish, filler pieces or mounting hardware match another item merely because both use a Shaker door. For the adjoining tall unit, review pantry cabinet assembly, delivery and access checks separately.

Frequently asked questions

What sizes do Berta bridge cabinets come in?

The reviewed range lists 30, 33 and 36-inch widths, five heights from 12 through 24 inches in 3-inch increments, and a 12-inch depth. Verify the selected model drawing and current availability.

Is a bridge cabinet size the refrigerator opening size?

No. The cabinet dimensions and refrigerator clearances serve different purposes. Account separately for ventilation, door operation, fillers, panels and the finished opening.

Can I use a 36-inch bridge cabinet over any 36-inch appliance?

Not from width alone. Check the appliance’s actual dimensions, installation clearances, mounting requirements and door movement as well as the cabinet height and depth.

Should I order the tallest cabinet that fits under the ceiling?

Only after establishing the lower clearance limit, upper datum, trim and support plan. A taller cabinet can intrude into the space needed by an appliance or window below.
