Hinge compatibility
Quick answer
Face-frame and frameless cabinets usually need different hinge mounting solutions because the cabinet-side attachment surface is different. A face-frame box has a solid-wood frame around the opening; a frameless box mounts the hinge plate directly to the cabinet side. Do not choose only by opening angle or the words “soft close.”
Identify the cabinet construction first, then the door position—full overlay, partial overlay or inset—and finally match a hinge family, mounting plate and overlay specification that are designed to work together. A European cup hinge can serve either construction only when the product and its mounting hardware explicitly support that application.
See the mounting difference before measuring overlay
Face-frame cabinet
Front frame projects over the cabinet side; the hinge or adapter mounts to the frame.
Frameless cabinet
The cabinet side reaches the front edge; the mounting plate attaches to that side.
This sketch is conceptual, not a drilling template. Frame projection, side thickness, plate height, cup setback and door geometry vary by system. Berta’s cabinet-hinge style overview defines the major hinge families before you compare individual models.
Face-frame vs frameless hinge selection
| Decision | Face-frame cabinet | Frameless cabinet | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mounting surface | Front frame or a frame-specific adapter/plate | Cabinet side panel | Hinge family and mounting hardware named for the box construction |
| Door position | Full overlay, partial overlay or inset relative to the frame opening | Full overlay, half/partial overlay or inset relative to the cabinet side | How the manufacturer defines overlay for that system |
| Mounting hardware | Often integrated with a compact hinge or uses a face-frame adapter | Typically a system mounting plate on the side | Plate height, screw pattern, material thickness and included parts |
| Adjustment | Depends on the exact hinge; frame clearance can limit access | Depends on hinge/plate combination; clip-on systems can simplify service | Adjustment directions and range on the product page/manual |
| Opening geometry | Door must clear frame, neighboring fronts and pull-outs | Door must clear adjacent doors, end panels and interior fittings | Opening angle, protrusion and any restrictor options |
| Replacement risk | Existing frame screw holes and overlay may constrain choices | Cup and plate patterns may look similar but not interchange | Exact bore, hole spacing, setback and plate pattern |
Overlay is not the same as cabinet type. Measure the closed-door relationship using the cabinet hinge overlay sizing method. If the door sits inside the opening, use the separate inset hinge fit and installation checklist.
The six-step compatibility check
- Identify the cabinet. Is there a front frame, or does the side panel form the front edge?
- Identify the closed door position. Full overlay, partial/half overlay or inset.
- Measure the relevant overlay. Use the reference plane defined for that cabinet and hinge system.
- Confirm the door and box materials. Thickness, cup depth, edge distance and screw holding all matter.
- Select the complete system. Hinge, plate or frame mount, screws and any restrictor must be compatible.
- Make a drilling sample. Test closing position, reveals, adjustment, opening clearance and pull-out conflicts before drilling the finished doors.
Use the cabinet hinge quantity calculator only after choosing the correct hinge family; quantity does not solve compatibility. For terminology, compare full-overlay and half-overlay hinge layouts.
When a European hinge can work on both cabinet types
“European hinge” describes a broad concealed-hinge format, not one universal mount. Some hinge families are designed for frameless construction with a side-mounted plate. Other systems offer adapter plates for face frames, while compact hinges are designed specifically around face-frame mounting.
The hinge arm and plate create geometry together. Swapping a plate because the screw holes look convenient can change overlay, reveal and door movement. Manufacturer systems such as Blum’s CLIP top line illustrate how one hinge family can serve frameless and face-frame applications with different mounting plates; Blum’s COMPACT line is specifically positioned for face-frame cabinets. That manufacturer example explains the principle—it does not certify compatibility with a Berta hinge.
Berta hinge options matched to cabinet construction
105° face-frame soft-close hinge
Berta specifies this 20-piece set for face-frame cabinets, with mounting screws, hydraulic soft close and six-way adjustment. Product-specific cup data: 35 mm diameter, 11 mm depth and 45 mm hole spacing. Select the overlay variant that matches the measured door position; these measurements are not universal hinge dimensions.
Check face-frame overlay variants
110° frameless full-overlay hinge
Berta specifies this 20-piece set for full-overlay frameless cabinets. It uses a clip-on design, soft close and three-dimensional adjustment; mounting screws are listed as included. Confirm door thickness, drilling pattern and cabinet-side mounting before boring finished doors.

Opening angle is not the compatibility answer
A 105° or 110° opening description tells you something about motion, but not whether the hinge fits the cabinet construction or produces the required overlay. Wider angles can help corner access, while restrictors can protect nearby walls or handles; both remain model-specific decisions.
After installation, follow the cabinet hinge adjustment sequence to set reveals without chasing one screw at a time. If a door opens too far, review the hinge restrictor compatibility checklist rather than assuming that any clip fits any hinge.
Clearance
Open the door through its full path and check fillers, end panels, pulls, appliances and adjacent doors.
Interior fittings
Confirm hinge protrusion does not interfere with roll-outs, drawers or pull-out hardware.
Service
Make sure adjustment screws and clip releases remain reachable after shelves and accessories are installed.
Common mismatch symptoms
| Symptom | Likely selection issue | Check before adjusting |
|---|---|---|
| Door cannot reach the planned overlay | Wrong hinge crank, overlay variant or mounting-plate height | Cabinet type, overlay target and complete model numbers |
| Door hits the frame while opening | Face-frame clearance or cup setback incompatible with geometry | Manufacturer drilling diagram and sample-door motion |
| Frameless doors collide at a shared partition | Full-overlay hardware used where half/partial overlay is needed | How both doors share the cabinet side |
| Adjustment runs out before reveals align | Base geometry is wrong, not merely out of adjustment | Plate location, cup position, door size and cabinet square |
| Replacement hinge will not use existing holes | Look-alike pattern from another family or generation | Cup diameter/depth, hole spacing, setback and plate pattern |

Frequently asked questions
Can I use frameless hinges on a face-frame cabinet?
Only if the hinge manufacturer provides a compatible face-frame adapter or mounting plate and publishes the resulting overlay and drilling geometry. A standard frameless side plate should not be improvised on a frame.
Are face-frame hinges and overlay hinges the same thing?
No. Face frame describes cabinet construction; overlay describes where the closed door sits relative to the frame or cabinet side. A face-frame cabinet can use different overlays.
Do all concealed hinges use a 35 mm cup?
No. Many do, but cup diameter, depth, hole spacing and setback are model-specific. Use the exact product documentation. The 35 mm and 11 mm values above apply only to the cited Berta 105° face-frame hinge.
What hinge is used for two doors sharing one frameless partition?
A half- or partial-overlay solution is common because each door covers part of the shared side, but the correct hinge and plate depend on the system and required reveal. Model the pair, not one door in isolation.
Can adjustment fix a wrong overlay hinge?
Usually not. Adjustment is intended for final reveal and alignment within the hinge’s published range. It cannot reliably convert a wrong hinge crank, overlay variant or plate height into the correct geometry.
Match the box before drilling the door
Start with the cabinet construction, define the closed-door position, and select the hinge plus mounting hardware as a documented system. A five-minute sample on scrap is cheaper than repairing a row of misplaced cup holes.
Technical scope: Berta product details were checked on October 16, 2026. Blum references are used only to demonstrate how manufacturer hinge families distinguish face-frame and frameless mounting; they do not establish Berta compatibility. Installation dimensions and accessory compatibility must come from the exact hinge model.
