Gas Strut FAQ
Back to FAQsOverview
What are gas struts used for in cabinets?
Gas struts (also called hydraulic gas springs) are designed to hold cabinet doors open and provide smooth, controlled closing. They’re commonly used for overhead lift-up cabinet doors in kitchens, offices, and storage areas.
What’s the benefit of using gas struts over regular hinges?
Unlike hinges alone, gas struts add lift assistance, prevent doors from slamming, and keep doors open at a set angle for easier access.
Sizing & Compatibility
What sizes are available?
Berta gas struts come in different newton strengths (N ratings) such as 100N, 120N, and 150N to support various cabinet door weights.
How do I choose the right gas strut strength?
Measure the weight of your cabinet door. Light doors typically need 100N, medium doors 120N, and heavier doors 150N. If unsure, start lower — stronger struts can be harder to close.
Are Berta gas struts universal?
Yes — they fit frameless and face-frame cabinets and can be installed on wood, MDF, or laminate doors with standard mounting brackets.
Installation & Adjustment
Are gas struts easy to install?
Yes — they are DIY-friendly with included brackets and screws. You’ll only need a drill and measuring tape.
Do you have an installation video?
Yes! Watch our guide here: Berta Gas Spring Installation Video
Can I adjust the tension of a gas strut?
No — gas struts come pre-pressurized. If your door feels too light/heavy, you may need a different N rating.
Usage & Maintenance
Do gas struts work for both upward and downward opening doors?
Yes, but they’re primarily designed for upward-opening doors. Downward installs require careful placement to avoid overstress.
How long do gas struts last?
With normal use, they can last 50,000+ open/close cycles (several years in a kitchen environment).
Do they require maintenance?
No lubrication or maintenance is required. Just check the screws and brackets occasionally to ensure they stay tight.
