Cabinet Grade Plywood vs Cabinet Grade MDF

Plywood is often the practical starting point for cabinet boxes and shelves; unfinished MDF is often chosen for painted doors and routed details. The right choice depends on the component, its support and hardware, and whether you need a raw or factory-finished face.

Choose plywood when

The cabinet box comes first

You need a layered panel for boxes, shelves or drawer components. Check thickness, fastener requirements and the finish on every visible face.

Choose MDF when

The door or decorative face comes first

Choose unfinished MDF for a custom painted or routed component. For a finished gloss or matte slab front, compare acrylic-faced MDF instead.

Understand the two MDF options

Important product distinction: Berta Store’s MDF product featured below has a finished acrylic face. It is not the unfinished, paint-ready MDF discussed in the general comparison.

Side-by-side comparison

What Is the Difference Between Cabinet Grade Plywood and MDF?

This table compares veneer-core cabinet plywood with standard interior MDF. Specialty grades and finished surfaces can change the specification; they should not be treated as interchangeable.

What to compareCabinet plywoodCabinet MDF
Core constructionLayers of wood veneer bonded with alternating grain directions. Verify the actual core, not just the face species.Wood fibers bonded with resin under heat and pressure to form a uniform panel.
Strength & supportVeneer-core panels generally offer favorable stiffness and spanning performance. Thickness and support still matter.Suitable for many cabinet components, but shelves and large parts need a design appropriate to the specified board.
Screw holdingVeneer core generally holds screws well. Results depend on core quality, screw choice and placement.Hardware can be installed in MDF, but fastening details must suit the board, particularly at edges.
Surface & finishingMay have a natural wood veneer or a factory-applied surface. Unfinished and prefinished panels need different finishing plans.Raw MDF has no wood grain and is a useful base for paint or decorative surfacing. Acrylic MDF already has a finished face.
WeightVeneer-core plywood is generally lighter than standard MDF of the same size and thickness.Standard MDF is typically heavier. Use the actual panel weight when choosing hardware and planning handling.
MoistureDo not assume cabinet plywood is waterproof. Check its exposure specification and protect edges and cutouts.Standard MDF is sensitive to wetting. Moisture-resistant grades are separate products; a decorative face alone does not establish the core’s rating.
Common cabinet rolesCabinet boxes, drawer components, shelves and interior panels.Painted doors, routed panels and trim; finished acrylic MDF for slab fronts and visible decorative panels.
Price & valueCompare the specified thickness, core, face, finish and quantity—not just the word “plywood.”Do not compare a raw-MDF price with an acrylic-finished panel as though they were the same product. Include finishing and edge work.

Material name is not a load rating. Choose the exact panel for the shelf span, joints, hardware and environment. General core and MDF references: [1–3].

Layered wood construction

What Is Cabinet Grade Plywood?

For this comparison, cabinet plywood means a veneer-core panel: thin wood layers are bonded together, with grain directions alternating between layers. A hardwood face, such as birch or maple, provides the visible surface.

It is widely used for cabinet boxes, drawer components, shelves and furniture. A birch face does not mean every core layer is birch; the featured prefinished plywood uses a multi-ply poplar core.

Choose unfinished plywood for an appropriate custom finishing process, or a factory-finished panel when its existing surface suits the project.

Uniform fiber construction

What Is Cabinet Grade MDF?

MDF stands for medium-density fiberboard. Wood fibers and resin are pressed into a dense, consistent panel without the visible grain pattern of a wood veneer.

Its smooth surface and machinability make unfinished MDF useful for painted doors, routed profiles and decorative components. Specify the board and fastening method for the component; MDF is not limited to decoration alone.

The MDF core and the finished face are separate decisions. A raw board for painting is different from a panel supplied with acrylic already on its face. [1]

Avoid a common ordering mistake

Unfinished MDF vs Acrylic-Faced MDF

Choose the finishing route before choosing the sheet. The material under the surface may be MDF in both cases, but the fabrication plan is different.

For a custom paint process

Unfinished, paint-ready MDF

Consider a suitable raw MDF grade when you need routed details or a specific painted color. Allow for preparation, priming, coating and drying according to the coating system.

Not the product shown in the acrylic MDF card. Confirm the required raw-board specification and supply before planning a painted project.

Featured Berta Store product

Factory-finished acrylic MDF

Choose a listed gloss or matte color for a finished slab front or decorative panel. The acrylic face supplies the color and sheen; it is not a raw surface awaiting paint.

Plan exposed edges and machining before production. A finished face does not mean the cut piece is a fully fabricated cabinet door.

Match material to component

When Should You Choose Plywood or MDF?

Start with the part you are making rather than selecting one material for every part of the cabinet.

01

Cabinet boxes & shelves

Start by comparing plywood in the thickness and finish your cabinet design needs. Verify supports, spans and joints before deciding how a shelf will carry its load.

02

Painted doors & profiles

Consider unfinished MDF when a smooth painted surface or routed design is the goal. Confirm board grade, door dimensions and compatible hinges before fabrication.

03

Gloss or matte slab fronts

Compare acrylic MDF when you prefer an existing colored finish instead of a paint process. Approve the face and matching edge treatment before cutting.

A practical combination: plywood inside, finished MDF outside

Our suggested starting point for a modern cabinet is a prefinished plywood box with acrylic MDF fronts. This is a material-selection idea, not a universal construction specification; the door sizes, hardware and installation still need to suit the design.

Before ordering

Check More Than the Sheet Price

  • Dimensions & supportConfirm actual thickness, shelf span, support and door dimensions against your drawings. Nominal thickness is not a joinery measurement.
  • Hardware & exposed edgesCheck the fastener and hinge requirements. Plan edging, cutouts and the surface that will remain visible after assembly.
  • Environment & finished costVerify the moisture specification. Include finishing, edge work, waste and delivery when comparing the complete project cost.

Common questions

Plywood vs MDF for Cabinets: FAQs

Is plywood or MDF better for kitchen cabinets?
It depends on the component. Plywood is a common starting point for boxes and shelves; unfinished MDF is useful for painted or routed parts, while acrylic MDF offers a finished decorative face. Select the specific grade, thickness, support and hardware for the design.
Does “cabinet grade” mean the panel is waterproof?
No. Do not infer a moisture or exterior-use rating from the cabinet-grade label. Even moisture-resistant MDF is not the same as waterproof material. Confirm the actual product specification, protect cut edges and avoid prolonged wetting. The acrylic face does not establish a moisture-resistant rating for the MDF core. [3]
Is Berta Store’s acrylic MDF intended for painting?
The featured acrylic MDF is sold with a finished colored face in the selected gloss or matte option. For a new custom paint finish or routed painted design, specify an appropriate unfinished board instead of assuming acrylic-faced MDF is paint-ready.
Is white melamine plywood the same as MDF?
No. In the featured plywood product, White Melamine describes the surface over a plywood core. In the acrylic MDF product, the decorative face is acrylic and the core is MDF. Always check both the surface and what is underneath it.
