A 4×8 sheet of plywood has no single standard weight. In the reference calculations below, a true 3/4-inch sheet weighs about 57 lb with a lightweight spruce construction or 85 lb with an all-birch construction. A 1220 × 2440 mm, 18 mm all-birch sheet calculates to about 80 lb.

How much does 3/4 plywood weigh?

First check what “3/4” means on the selected product. A true 3/4 inch is 19.05 mm. An 18 mm cabinet panel and a 23/32-inch panel are thinner, so they contain less material when everything else stays the same.

Do not treat 18 mm as an exact conversion of 3/4 inch. For joinery and dimension planning, use the nominal-to-actual plywood thickness chart . For weight, use the actual dimensions and the correct panel density or a measured sheet weight.

Baltic Birch plywood weight: use the all-birch core

Berta Store’s unfinished BB/BB Baltic Birch plywood has a birch core and listed sheet dimensions of 1220 × 2440 mm. It should not be assigned the same weight as a birch-faced panel built around a different core.

The table below applies the all-birch reference density to that metric sheet format. It is a calculated comparison, not a stock list or a set of measured product specifications.

Why one number is not a guarantee: WISA publishes a birch density reference of 680 ± 50 kg/m³. Applying that density band to a 1220 × 2440 × 18 mm sheet gives roughly 74–86 lb. That is a sensitivity example, not Berta’s product tolerance. Actual thickness, condition and construction still matter.

Prefinished, white melamine and maple plywood weight

A surface name is not a weight specification. “Maple” identifies the face veneer; “white melamine” identifies the decorative surface. Neither tells you the density of every layer inside the sheet.

White Melamine plywood

The selected Berta 3/4-inch White Melamine variant uses a multi-ply poplar plywood core. Do not substitute the all-birch chart as its measured weight.

Prefinished Maple

The maple panel has a cabinet-grade hardwood plywood core and a factory clear finish. It is not a solid maple slab, so solid-lumber density is not a reliable shortcut.

As a separate manufacturer example, Garnica publishes an average density of 450 kg/m³ for its poplar-core, ilomba-faced panel. This illustrates why core selection matters, but it is not a weight specification for Berta’s prefinished plywood. Source and scope

Why sheets with the same label weigh differently

Core and construction

Different veneers, adhesive content and overlays change the panel’s average density. Use a density for the complete panel, not just the visible face species.

Actual thickness

At constant size and density, weight increases directly with thickness. Metric cabinet panels and inch-based labels should not be treated as identical measurements.

Sheet area

A 5×5 sheet has 25 square feet; a 4×8 has 32. At the same thickness and density, the 5×5 weighs about 22% less.

Moisture and condition

Water absorbed by a panel adds mass. A dry-reference calculation cannot establish the weight of a sheet that has been exposed to rain or wet storage.

A 49 × 98 inch panel also has about 4.2% more area than a 48 × 96 inch panel. Check the plywood sheet-size guide before applying a 4×8 weight to an oversized sheet.

How to calculate plywood weight

Use a manufacturer’s panel density and keep the units consistent. With dimensions in meters:

Weight in kg = length × width × thickness × density in kg/m³ Weight in lb = weight in kg × 2.2046

For example, 1.22 × 2.44 × 0.018 × 680 = 36.4 kg, or approximately 80 lb. The 680 kg/m³ density is an input assumption, not something established by the dimensions.

Working in feet and inches instead? Convert thickness to feet:

Weight in lb = area in sq ft × (thickness in inches ÷ 12) × density in lb/ft³

For a cut piece from the same uniform sheet, scale a known sheet weight by area. A 24 × 48 inch piece has one-quarter the area of a 48 × 96 inch sheet. If the full sheet weighs 80 lb, that piece is approximately 20 lb before allowing for cut loss or added hardware.

Sheet weight vs pallet weight

Sheet-only weight is the material total. Packed shipment weight also includes the pallet or skid, protective sheets, blocking, wrapping and straps. Mixed orders need a separate weight calculation for each product and thickness.

If 25 sheets total 2,000 lb and the actual skid and packaging add 60 lb, the packed total is 2,060 lb. The 60 lb packaging amount is an example—not a standard allowance for every pallet. Do not assume that 50 sheets should be packed together simply because their combined weight has been calculated.

Use the weight chart for planning—not capacity ratings

A panel’s own weight does not tell you how much a shelf can hold. Load capacity depends on the panel properties, span, orientation, supports and connections. Use the appropriate design information rather than treating a heavier sheet as automatically stronger. Design reference

For pickup, include packaging, tools and other cargo when checking the vehicle’s permitted payload and load distribution. Arrange suitable panel-handling equipment or help for bulky sheets; an estimated weight alone cannot establish a safe one-person lift.

For freight, confirm the packed dimensions, gross weight and unloading method with the warehouse and carrier. Use the actual prepared shipment when an estimate could put the load close to a transport or equipment limit.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a 4×8 sheet of 3/4 plywood weigh?

At a true 3/4-inch thickness, the reference calculations in this guide give about 57 lb for lightweight spruce plywood and 85 lb for all-birch plywood. Actual products can fall outside those examples. An 18 mm sheet is thinner than a true 3/4-inch sheet.

How much does 1/2-inch plywood weigh?

A 48 × 96 inch sheet calculated at a true 1/2 inch weighs about 38 lb at 460 kg/m³ or 57 lb at 680 kg/m³. Use the actual panel thickness and construction when selecting a value.

How much does 1/4-inch plywood weigh?

The true 1/4-inch examples are approximately 19 lb for the spruce reference and 28 lb for the all-birch reference. A panel manufactured at 6 mm is not exactly 1/4 inch and will calculate differently.

How much does 18 mm Baltic Birch weigh?

A 1220 × 2440 × 18 mm all-birch sheet calculates to approximately 36.4 kg, or 80 lb, using 680 kg/m³. This is a reference estimate, not a measured weight for every Baltic Birch product.

Is white melamine plywood heavier than birch plywood?

The surface name alone cannot answer that. Check whether the core is poplar, birch or another material, then compare equal actual sizes and thicknesses. Use the finished panel’s weight rather than adding a universal melamine allowance.

Does the plywood weight chart include the pallet?

No. The chart covers sheet-only calculations. Add the actual pallet, protection and packaging weights to estimate the packed shipment.

Why does a pallet calculator show a different total?

It may use product-specific assumptions, different sheet dimensions, packaging allowances or a mixed-product load. Compare the inputs and confirm the packed warehouse weight rather than treating either estimate as a scale reading.

The inch chart uses exactly 48 × 96 inches and the listed fractional thickness; the Baltic Birch chart uses 1220 × 2440 mm and the listed metric thickness. Pounds are rounded to whole numbers and kilograms to one decimal place. Decimal display does not imply measurement accuracy.

Density reference: WISA Plywood: sizes, thicknesses and weights publishes approximately 460 ± 50 kg/m³ for spruce and 680 ± 50 kg/m³ for birch. These are manufacturer reference values, not Berta product certifications or guaranteed shipping weights.
