Plywood & MDF Sheet Estimator

Plan your project with ease! Use our plywood & MDF sheet calculator to estimate panels — available in 4×8, 5×5, 5×10, or custom sizes. Perfect for cabinets, walls, and furniture with instant sheet estimates.

One of the most frustrating parts of starting a cabinet or woodworking job is figuring out how many panels to buy. Guess too low, and you’re back on the phone reordering material. Guess too high, and you’re stuck with sheets you don’t need. That’s exactly why Berta built this plywood and MDF calculator for our customers.

How the Estimator Works

The Berta calculator is straightforward: type in the total length and height of the area you’re covering, subtract any openings (doors, windows, or gaps), and the tool does the math. It’s preset to the standard 4×8 foot sheet (48×96 inches), which covers 32 square feet, but you can also select 5×5, 5×10, or even enter a custom size if you’re using non-standard panels.

The tool also takes into account two things most people forget about:

  • Waste and offcuts – Nobody gets 100% yield from a sheet. Between saw mistakes, awkward cuts, and grain matching, some material always ends up on the shop floor. That’s why the estimator adds an extra 5–12%.
  • Kerf – Every pass of the blade eats a little wood. A standard 1/8" kerf doesn’t sound like much, but it adds up across a job. Our calculator reduces the usable square footage per sheet to keep you from coming up short.

Why It Helps

If you’re building kitchen cabinets, closets, or wall paneling, this tool gives you a reliable number before you buy. Contractors use it to budget jobs more accurately, and homeowners use it to avoid the “back to the store” headache. It’s not a gimmick—it’s the same math pros do by hand, just faster.

And once you know how many sheets you need, you can order the right product right here from Berta:

When to Use Plywood vs. MDF

Not sure which way to go? Plywood is strong, holds screws well, and works beautifully in structural applications like cabinet boxes or subfloors. MDF, on the other hand, has a smooth finish that’s excellent for painting or laminating. Many contractors mix both: plywood for structure, MDF for doors and trim.

Before You Order

Always round up. If the calculator tells you 11 sheets, buy 12. The extra sheet will save you if something gets damaged during cutting or transport. It’s cheap insurance.
